Azerbaijan: THE place for hitchhiking!!!!

After reading in the article entitled “Azerbaijanis: The Most Welcoming People Ever”, you can try to guess how crazily easy was hitchhiking in Azerbaijan.

So, imagine being a blond girl and a blond guy-friend travelling by hitchhiking in Azerbaijan!!! That was my far the richest autostop experience ever!!!

The cars were stopping extremely easily. It was honestly like having a free taxi, which stopped where we need and took us to our exact destination.

After some rides, we knew that the cars will stop anyway for us, so we started being picky. Sometimes,  more than three or four cars that stopped simultaneously in order to pick us up. Hahaha! Therefore, we had the luxury to choose among the cars. We usually preferred the more comfortable cars with English speakers.

While we were hitchhiking we were invited many times for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I particularly remember one time that we hitchhiked from Guba back to Baku, where we were staying. The man in the car took us directly to our destination.  When we arrived he asked us if we wanted to join him for dinner. I really wanted to go to the hammam that day, because it was the only day accepting woman. Nevertheless, my intuition was saying that we should pick this person’s offer. He took us to a beautiful fancy restaurant. Try to imagine the prizes there were equal to the average prices in Greece. So this restaurant was very expensive for Azerbaijan’s standards.

Apparently, our driver was a close friend with the owner of the restaurant. They order us the richest meal ever. A vast variety of tasteful meat, soups, potatoes, fruits, vegetables  and many other delicacies. It was honestly the tastiest meal I had in one month travelling. As we were sitting in the owner´s tables the waiters were feeling our waters all the time… hahaha it was such an irony for hitchhikers to be treated like that!!!

Soon the owner’s girlfriend came. She was an English speaker and she helped as the bridge of communication within us and the non-speaking men. Thanks to her we stay there lots of hours and we enjoyed the conversations with interesting people.

In the end of the night we while we were expressed our gratefulness to  them, we told them that is was worthwhile spending time with them, even if I had lost the hammam experience. The owner asked me: “Do you want to go to

The owner asked me: “Do you want to go to hammam? I have a friend that he owns a hammam. You can go tonight or any other time”.  With my German friend we looked in the eyes and we start laughing… It was so funny but also amazing how nice and smooth can be the things for hitchhikers some times. From a point you look for a free ride, you get invited for dinner in a luxurious restaurant and after that for a free hammam.

That’s why I do love hitchhiking! It is not about saving money,
especially in countries that cheap like Azerbaijan. It is about action!! It is about taking things to the limits! It is about live the enthusiasm and the happiness of the unexpected! That’s the beauty of life..
